New graduates who have completed their dietetic education and practical training through an approved program in Canada and are planning to do their initial licensure with SCD must submit an application form, fee payment and documentation (eg. university transcripts, practicum completion letter, criminal record check, name change documents). Applications will not be processed until all of the documentation is received.
Access the application form and online payment portal here. Payment can be done with a credit card or you can choose to etransfer or mail your cheque to the SCD office.
Applicants who meet all of the registration requirements with the exception of successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam (CDRE) will be granted a Restricted Licence with SCD while they are waiting to write the exam. The Restricted Licence entitles the individual to use the designation Graduate Dietitian, RD (candidate) or P.Dt. (candidate) and to practice dietetics up to 12 weeks after the completion of the CDRE. A restricted member can work in the capacity of a dietitian but must identify themselves as a graduate dietitian or RD (candidate) and not use the titles/designations protected by the Dietitians Act.
The fee for the CDRE is $600 and it is offered twice a year (May and November). When a member with a restricted licence passes the CDRE, their Restricted Licence is converted to a Full Practising Licence. A maximum of three attempts at the CDRE are permitted with mandatory upgrading required after a second failure.
