A food recall warning was issued in February 2022 in relation to certain powdered infant formula products manufactured at Abbott’s facility in Sturgis, Michigan. This facility is a key supplier of specialty infant feeding products in Canada and the United States. The Sturgis facility has since re-opened, but since production has only just resumed it is expected that availability of extensively hydrolyzed and amino-acid based formulas in Canada and abroad will continue to be impacted for some time.
There is no current shortage of regular infant formula in Canada. However, there is a shortage of infant formulas for infants with food allergies and certain medical conditions. Access Health Canada Fact Sheet here and resources for families about formulas for infants with food allergies here. The Saskatchewan government has also issued a statement about the specialized infant formula shortage. Access their statement here.
